Being that this is a serious sad topic in which 2-3% of the world population suffers from this disorder (with 3 million cases in the United States annually), there will not be any humor (meaning any of my stick figures/comments/memes as all of that is extremely insensitive to the harsh reality of the disease.

Before we continue, it should be known that this disorder/disability has been known by multiple names with it formerly known as Mental Retardation but due to the usage of the name in offensive way and a desire to strive for a more political correct term resulted in the usage of better suited names such as Intellectual development disorder, General learning disability or Intellectual disability (ID)
Intellectual disability is a disorder that results in the patient having debilitated intellectual along with "adaptive functioning." These people have IQ scores lower than 70 followed by other adaptive behaviors that affect their daily lives. This disorder can be segment into two types in which it can be syndromic intellectual disability (in which ID is a result of another medical or behavioral disease/disorder/abnormalities) or non-syndromic ID where it is not associated with other disorders or diseases.
There are many factors that can lead to ID in which it can be a result of having another disease/disorder such as Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome. On the other hand, it can be a result of other factors such as cerebral injury, malnutrition (such as iodine deficiency), lead poisoning, drinking alcohol during pregnancy and the list goes on with many other factors that influence a person's fate.
But overall, the patient do not usually have any visible signs of the disorder. The patient would suffer from the following symptoms such as having difficulty with learning, problem solving, social rules, memory skills, and be delayed in oral language development. Children with ID would be slower than regular children in which it would take more time for them to learn language and social skills as well as be lacking in other skills such as being able to eat or dress on their own. The people suffering from this disorder can suffer from many behavioral disorder such as hyperactivity, impulsivity or restlessness as well as having difficulty thinking and understanding.
At the moment, there currently does not exist any cure for ID but there are many available treatments and support for people suffering from it. These services provided by specialists (such as caregivers, clinicians, speech therapist, pediatric neurologist, occupational therapist, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, pediatrician, medical geneticist) and programs that aim to assist people suffering with ID in which they strive to provide various services to meet their needs such as by providing housing, rehabilitation and assistance with them. Alongside that, these treatments help to develop their skills ranging from helping them to become independent by refining their practical and social skills to helping them as well as others to help them improve their oral skills. Therapies such as developmental social pragmatic model, applied behavior analysis, behavior therapy, sensory processing and animal assisted therapy can help them improve their lives. Over time and effort, treatment can be effective as to enable patients with ID to be able to obtain and maintain employment!
Intellectual disability can last for many years or a whole life time with as long as the person lives. It usually detected at early stage of a infant/child and can continue for their whole life with the adults being able to obtain later on in life. Infants are susceptible to it due to genetic problems or harmful lifestyle of their mother (such as drinking excessive alcohol) which could induce the disability. Currently most affects adults as people with ID age into adulthood.
